Answers To Common Headstone Questions

For those who are still dealing with the planning and details of a memorial service after losing a loved one, choosing a headstone can be an overwhelming process. Particularly for those who have never had to select a headstone before, there are often a lot of questions. This article aims to clarify some of those questions in the hopes of making the headstone selection process a little easier for you.

Can You Get A Headstone For Someone Who Was Cremated?

You can get a headstone for anyone, whether they were cremated or opted for a traditional burial. All you need to have is a burial site to place the headstone on. In fact, even if you opt to purchase a grave plot for a cremated loved one but plan to hold onto the cremains, you can still have a headstone placed at the grave plot as a form of a memorial.

What Are Your Headstone Options?

Headstones can be crafted out of a variety of materials, including marble, granite, and even bronze. Your only limitations will be the regulations set forth by the cemetery where you wish to place the stone.

Some cemeteries may prohibit the use of certain materials in specific areas of the grounds, such as isolating granite headstones to sections of the property with denser soil. You may even find that the cemetery has thematic designs where brass and more intricate headstones are used in one section of the cemetery and marble or granite is isolated in another.

Can You Make Changes To A Placed Headstone?

While you might think that what you order and place on the headstone is what you will have forever, the truth is that you can, in fact, make changes to an existing headstone. Typically, changes are permitted if you are adding to the stone, as they can have someone come out to the gravesite and add the information or feature that you are looking for.

You cannot typically have things removed from a headstone as easily, though. That's why it is important that you are confident in what you have engraved on the stone. Even if you decide to add to it later, you cannot usually remove what you have placed on the stone initially.
